President-elect Donald Trump is trying to get the Georgia election interference case against him dismissed, asserting that the state's courts will not have jurisdiction over him once he returns to the White House next month. The Georgia case against Trump and others is mostly on hold pending a pretrial appeal of an order allowing prosecutor Fani Willis to remain on the case despite what defense attorneys say is a conflict of interest. Trump's attorneys on Wednesday filed a notice with the Georgia Court of Appeals saying a sitting president is “completely immune from indictment or any criminal process, state or federal.” The filing asks the appeals court to consider before he becomes president next month whether it has jurisdiction to continue to hear the case. It says the court should conclude that it and the trial court lack jurisdiction “as the continued indictment and prosecution of President Trump by the State of Georgia are unconstitutional.” Trump's lawyers ask that the appeals court dismiss his appeal for lack of jurisdiction and instruct the trial court to immediately dismiss the indictment against him. Trump on Monday asked a Manhattan judge to throw out his conviction in his hush money case , saying that continuing to pursue it would present unconstitutional “disruptions to the institution of the Presidency.“ The New York case was the only one of Trump’s four criminal indictments to go to trial, resulting in a historic verdict that made him the first former president to be convicted of a crime. In the Georgia case, Trump and some of the other remaining defendants, who have pleaded not guilty, were already seeking to have Willis removed from the prosecution or to have the indictment dismissed. They cited a romantic relationship she had with Nathan Wade , a special prosecutor she appointed to lead the case. Willis and Wade have acknowledged that they had a relationship but have said it began after he was hired and ended before the indictment against Trump was filed. Trump and other defendants argued that the relationship created a conflict of interest that should disqualify Willis and her office from continuing with her prosecution of the case. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee ruled in March that Willis’ actions showed a “tremendous lapse in judgment,” but he did not find a conflict of interest that would disqualify Willis. He said she could continue her prosecution as long as Wade stepped aside, which he did. The appeal of that ruling remains pending but must be decided by March. Chesebro was charged in August 2023, alongside Trump and 17 others , in the sprawling indictment accusing them of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to overturn Trump's loss in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. He pleaded guilty to a single conspiracy count a few months later after reaching a deal with prosecutors just before he was to go to trial. His lawyer on Wednesday asked Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee to invalidate the plea after McAfee in September tossed out the charge to which he had pleaded guilty. “In Georgia, a defendant cannot plead guilty to a charge that does not constitute a crime,” defense attorney Manny Arora wrote, adding that a failure to invalidate his plea would violate Chesebro's constitutional right to due process. Prosecutors have said Chesebro was part of a plot to have a group of 16 Georgia Republicans sign a certificate falsely saying that Trump had won Georgia and declaring themselves the state’s “duly elected and qualified” electors. He pleaded guilty in October 2023 to one felony charge of conspiracy to commit filing false documents related to the the filing of that document with the federal court in Atlanta. In a September ruling, McAfee wrote that punishing someone for filing certain documents with a federal court would “enable a state to constrict the scope of materials assessed by a federal court and impair the administration of justice in that tribunal to police its own proceedings.” He concluded that the count must be quashed “as beyond the jurisdiction of this State.”

NoneNew Delhi, Dec 22, 2024- The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has sought reforms in India’s Priority Sector Lending (PSL) framework to enable the setting up of more Development Finance Institutions (DFI) to provide funds to new and emerging sectors such as digital infrastructure, green initiatives, healthcare, and innovative manufacturing. “The current Development Finance Institutions like SIDBI and NABFID have their roles cut out as they have earmarked sectors to finance. Therefore, CII has suggested setting up of a high-level committee to look at the revision of Priority Sector Lending norms and also explore the need for any new DFIs to cater to some of the new and emerging sectors,” the CII said in a statement on Sunday. Despite its massive success, the PSL framework requires regular recalibration to remain relevant. This recalibration is essential to ensure that the financial resources are optimally distributed, in harmony with our vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the statement said. For instance, while agriculture contributes 14 per cent of the GDP today, its PSL allocation remains at 18 per cent, unchanged from when its GDP share exceeded 30 per cent. Similarly, sectors like infrastructure and innovative manufacturing lack adequate PSL focus despite their potential to drive economic growth, it added. India’s economy has evolved rapidly over the past few decades, with employment focus shifting to newer sectors because of increased education levels in the society and higher disposable incomes, the statement said. The PSL is a vital policy tool in India, aimed at ensuring that key sectors crucial to the nation’s development receive adequate financial support. Mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), PSL obligates banks to allocate a specified proportion of their loans to sectors such as agriculture, education, housing, and small industries. The framework ensures equitable credit distribution, contributing to the socio-economic growth of underserved areas. CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said: “Sectors like agriculture have reduced contribution to GDP from 30 per cent in the 1990s to about 14 per cent now. Hence, it is time that the Priority Sector Lending (PSL) framework be reviewed every 3-4 years to align based on emerging priorities and PSL allocations should be in line with GDP contributions and sectoral growth potential. For instance, we could look at the inclusion of Emerging and High-Impact Sectors, including digital infrastructure, green initiatives, healthcare, and innovative manufacturing.” The industry chamber has, therefore, recommended inclusion in PSL of sectors like green energy projects, electric vehicles, and climate-resilient agriculture along with sectors like digital technologies, artificial intelligence and healthcare innovation. The CII has further pointed out that besides the above sectors, Infrastructure and manufacturing are poised to make substantial contributions to India’s economic growth. Have you ever been to a live performance of a favorite band or artist and been left a bit disappointed with the gap between their recordings that you know so well and the live sound that has plenty of energy but lacks a certain finesse or clarity? If you have experienced that, then you are not alone. It’s just as frustrating for the artists who want to produce the best live performance they can. One of the problems with live sound is the microphones that are used on stage often capture far less nuance than the large capsule condenser microphones used in most recording studios. Like at Candy Cane Lane in Crown Point, the homeowners are coordinating their Christmas decorations to achieve a greater cumulative effect than any could attain on their own. Dustin Voris, who does the Griswold’s on Greenwood Christmas display at 8147 Greenwood Ave. in Munster, organized the Christmas display after seeing neighbors display pumpkins in a similar way in a Hammond neighborhood. "I'm big into trying to make memories for Christmas, especially for kids," he said. "I thought it was pretty cool when I saw the pumpkins. I proposed the idea for spreading Christmas cheer. Four or five people did it at first. But it caught on. There are now 27 snowmen." Neighbor Amanda Kilibarda Gutierrez said more and more of the snowmen kept cropping up along the street. "Dustin really did the heavy lifting on this," she said. "He pitched the idea on Facebook and started tagging people. Every day, you would see a couple more. It was fun to see how many participated. Even people who don't live on the block joined in after seeing it on the Munster Facebook page. It really brightens my day." The Munster Education Foundation named Greenwood Avenue the best block for two years as part of a fundraiser. It was recognition for block parties that helped bring everyone together, she said. "Knowing everybody really helped this happen," she said. "That really isn't that common anymore." Word spread along the block. Frosty-like snowmen popped up, and carloads of wide-eyed kids followed. Though it's a residential neighborhood, it gets a lot of traffic because of all the people who come to see the "National Lampoon's A Christmas Vacation"-inspired Griswold’s on Greenwood. "Dustin has a destination house that people have been driving down the street to see for years," she said. "The snowmen are something unexpected for folks who see his house. Little kids love it. My kids are 6 and 8 and love to go by his house. But it's spread to houses on Ridge Road. It's gotten bigger than we originally thought." Voris chose snowmen for the display so it would be inclusive for everyone. As more and more neighbors joined in, 12-foot-tall snowmen now smile brightly outside of almost every other house on the block. "People get excited driving their kids down and counting the snowmen. Kids say this is the coolest block," he said. "I want to create memories for kids. I love seeing them smile. It brings cheer and creates memories." As far as his own childhood goes, he fondly remembers Christmas mornings. "It was chaos but there was a warmth and happiness," he said. "Everyone lives so far apart but they would be there for each other. That meant so much to me." Voris loves Christmas and piles his family into the car to sing Christmas carols and go see Christmas lights in towns throughout Chicagoland. They've traveled as far north as Gurnee to go look at Christmas lights, using three different iPhone apps to find the best spots to see. "We've gone everywhere," he said. "We go to a couple different cities a day. We go into Illinois." Almost invariably, I reach a point with games like Balatro , Dead Cells , or Hades when, watching my playtime balloon, I feel the need to remove the temptation to play the game. Roguelikes, almost by definition, pursue an addictive structure that reviewers often describe as the “one more run” feeling, wherein the player feels compelled to begin the loop again (and again, and — you get it). Another common phrase you’ll hear tossed around is the idea that you “lost time” to a game, as though the game has tricked you into giving it more of your life than you were consciously willing to give. For me, this kind of compulsive play leads to something I’ve started to think of as “roguelike dread,” or the feeling that I really need to move on from a potentially infinite game lest it completely take over my life. Usually, that is when I delete it. Now, clearly this is a me problem. There are undoubtedly people with better impulse control, and there are doubtless people for whom this feeling of “losing” time to a game is experienced not as dread but as joy. ( Infinite gameplay for 20-30 bucks? That’s a steal. ) Still, a cursory Googling suggests that I’m not alone in my experience of roguelike dread, of feeling like these games are so engaging as to be all-consuming. So, to my fellow roguelike uninstallers, I am here to say to you: Download Windblown — it’s so good. Windblown , the newest game from Dead Cells developer Motion Twin, was released in early access in late October. Trading the sidescrolling, pixel art vibe of Dead Cells for a top-down, cel-shaded romp through skybound islands, Windblown succeeds at feeling both distinct from Motion Twin’s last effort and close enough in spirit that it’s easy to sink into its loop. True to form, the game is plenty challenging and, even in early access, already offers substantial meta-progression unlocks to keep each run feeling fresh. Combat is the star here, with a new emphasis on chaining different attacks for maximum damage. The soundtrack is also catchy as hell, equal parts synth and rock, with a vocal track that never fails to get me hype when it comes in. Even in what feels like a very early build, design-wise, Windblown clearly has what it takes to keep you playing for days, months, and years on end. Time for another admission, though: I don’t like playing roguelikes in early access. The reason is probably obvious, given all that I’ve already written. I know myself, and I know that I burn out on these types of games, so I’m loath to put time into something that is unfinished, fearful of the idea that I won’t want to come back to it when it reaches 1.0. I put down Hades 2 earlier this year for this exact reason. Everything in me wanted to keep pressing forward, but whenever I saw placeholder art or read the game balance changelog, I felt this nagging feeling that I should save my stamina for when the game is “complete.” Roguelike dread is inevitable for me, and so I’ve found it best to wait out a game until at least 1.0, if not later. Or so I thought. Windblown can be a great single-player experience, but as the game’s marketing will readily tell you, that is definitely not the point of Windblown . The point is two-to-three-player co-op. The point is tackling the game’s sky-high challenge with a friend or two. The point is to lose time together . So once more to my fellow roguelike uninstallers, I am here to say to you: No, seriously — Windblown , get on it, it’s great. Here’s the thing: Windblown is not the first multiplayer roguelike. Not by a long shot. Somewhere out there, a Risk of Rain 2 player is pulling their hair out reading this, which, if you are, please stop. I see you, and I honor you. Even The Binding of Isaac , after all these years, just added online co-op. I’m not here to claim that Windblown is the first, nor even the best, multiplayer roguelike. What I am here to claim is that it was my first multiplayer roguelike, and because of that, it came with a revelation: The answer to roguelike dread is other people. Usually, playing a roguelike, I begin asking myself questions like “Has this become a waste of my time?” or “Are there other games I’d rather be playing right now?” More generally, I might start to feel that creeping sensation that I’m spending too much time on a single thing. Indeed, I do get a bit of that feeling when playing Windblown as a single-player game. It’s a roguelike, after all, and I’ve already laid out my personal mental hurdles when it comes to the genre. Any loop, no matter how pleasant, eventually gives way to the feeling that I want out of it. Unless, it turns out, I’m not the only one in the loop. I won’t extol the joys of multiplayer gaming to an audience well versed in such things, but I will say this: It was comical to me how quickly and how completely my worrying over “losing time” or feeling addicted to a roguelike dissipated when it was something I was sharing with a close friend. Instantly, I no longer cared whether this early build would feel incomplete compared to 1.0. All I cared about was chatting about our workdays and strategizing over who picked up what item when. Suddenly the time I spent on the game felt less like a personal indulgence and more like an interpersonal investment. What did we care if the game changed tomorrow? The time spent together would be worthwhile no matter how many digits came after the pre-release version number. The game was a social vehicle as much as it was a random number generator, and it was all the richer for it. For me, playing Windblown was a good reminder to me to open up my gaming experiences to other people. The world can sometimes feel lonely and punishing, and so can roguelikes. But when you travel the path with other people, success feels more within reach. Or if not success, then at least a valiant effort that you can laugh about together. Even failure feels better when someone else is there to pick you back up again. Even as a rampant roguelike uninstaller, I have not yet deleted Windblown . In fact, I don’t feel compelled to in the least. Instead, I’m looking forward to the next update and checking it out with a friend, seeing what new obstacles we might overcome together. The avoided arbitration with two pitchers Friday, agreeing to contracts for next season with right-handers and both of whom will be returning to the mound after missing all of this past season because of injuries. According to people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly, May settled with the Dodgers at $2.135 million and Gonsolin at $5.4 million. The Dodgers on Friday also non-tendered relief pitchers Brent Honeywell Jr. and Zach Logue, making them free agents and clearing two spots on the club's 40-man roster. The moves came ahead of Friday's deadline for teams to tender contracts to pre-arbitration and arbitration-eligible players. May, 27, has a 3.10 earned-run average in 46 appearances but has yet to fulfill his promise as a top prospect because of struggles with injuries. Since the start of 2021, May has made just 20 starts. In May 2021 he underwent Tommy John surgery. After returning near the end of 2022, his 2023 season was cut short by another elbow surgery, this time to repair his flexor tendon. Then, after hoping to return this past season, May required esophageal surgery in July, sidelining him for the remainder of the year. Despite that, the Dodgers still envision May as a potential impact player in his final season under team control before free agency, hopeful that he still will possess much of his old, wicked stuff. Gonsolin, 30, is in a similar situation. After his breakout All-Star campaign in 2022 was derailed by a late-season arm injury, Gonsolin struggled in 2023 before undergoing Tommy John surgery that August. He came close to returning at the end of this past season, including completing a minor-league rehab assignment. But the Dodgers didn't put him on their postseason roster, deciding against rushing him back. Both Gonsolin, who won’t be a free agent until after the 2026 season, and May are expected to be ready for opening day. In a stunning turnaround from the first Test in Perth, India are on the ropes at 5-128 - still staring down a 29-run deficit. Here’s the big Talking Points from Day 2. TRAVIS “HEADACHE” WREAKS HAVOC AGAINST INDIA AGAIN Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri has a way with words and his assessment of Head, at least from an Indian viewpoint, was word perfect on Saturday. When marvelling at the audacious innings from the South Australian, whose 140 separated Australia from India in terms of first innings scores, Shastri quipped the left-hander had earned the nickname “Headache” in India given his exploits. In the World Test Championship decider at The Oval 18 months ago, Head was brilliant in the opening innings when scoring 163 runs from 174 balls in a match Australia ultimately won by 209 runs. In the ODI World Cup Final last November, Head was again the wrecker, with his 137 from 120 balls at the top of the order enabling Australia to secure the prized crown. Then, in front of his home town and with Australia under pressure after its flop in Perth to start the series, Head delivered again to the raucous applause of a sell-out home crowd, who loved every minute of the innings. They were less pleased with Mohammed Siraj, who bowled Head with a yorker and then issued a send-off, with the feisty Indian fast bowler booed at every turn from then on by the partisan home state fans. But as Australian great Adam Gilchrist, a fellow left-hander who wielded the willow with similar dash and dare, noted, the end of the innings is not the thing that will be remembered in years to come. “The big story and the one you will read about tomorrow on the back page, front page and every other page of the Adelaide Advertiser will be Travis Head, “ Gilchrist said. “It was his third century on his home ground and it was a wonderful innings. It is another addition to the 100 mark for Travis Head.” In securing his third straight century in a Test match at Adelaide Oval, following his 119 against the West Indies earlier this year and the 175 he made against the combined Caribbean nations a year earlier as well. Champion Australian fast bowler Brett Lee told foxsports.com.au he is far from surprised that Head is able to excel on the biggest stages. “That is the style of critter that he is. He’s almost old school. And what I mean by that (is that) he doesn’t get overawed by the situation,” Lee said. “He likes to score freely. And sometimes you know when you’re up against a world class attack — and certainly look at Jasprit Bumrah with his numbers, his figures, his longevity already, he’s arguably the best bowler in the world currently — but you wouldn’t know that the way that Travis has played. “He just batted out of his skin because he looked to score. It’s almost a tribute he was showing that to his wife and his young child, because they ride the highs and lows with you, and it’s a team effort, not only just on the field, but also with their families.” THE BUMRAH BLUEPRINT As Adam Gilchrist assessed the wreckage from an Australian perspective in Perth, he did cite one potential positive the hosts could take from Western Australia when it came to the effectiveness of Jasprit Bumrah. After Head, Mitch Marsh and Alex Carey batted well in the second innings in WA, Gilchrist said that provided the Aussies could survive the initial onslaught from the Indian champion, it might be possible to mount a challenge with the bat. “The thing we showed, to a lesser extent — and I don’t see this as a weakness for India — but it certainly highlighted just how impactful Bumrah is,” Gilchrist said in Perth. “He’s been very well supported by (Mohammed) Siraj and (Harshit) Rana to this point of this game, but it just showed a little snapshot of just how reliant they are on Bumrah to make an impact. “Thinking big picture, Australia will be able to take some sort of information away that ... if they can wait him out and lessen the damage, lighten the damage that he inflicts, though they might go a fair way to batting deeper in innings and creating a contest.” And so it proved, for the ability of Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne to survive on Friday night proved critical to allowing Australia to prosper courtesy of Head on Saturday. Halfway through the second session, Bumrah began to cramp and while Siraj was able to knock over the tail after securing the wicket of Head, it is clear that India has a reliance on its premier paceman. “Other bowlers can be like a new ball bowler and they can bowl a bit at the death but Bumrah, unfortunately for Australia, he bowls well in all conditions and he bowls well with any ball in his hand, whether it’s white, red, pink,” Lee said. “But he’s definitely the most effective, as all fast bowlers are, with that brand new ball in his hand. So Gilly is right. If you can get yourself through that brand new ball with it, with that hard lacquer on it where it does shape around ... there’s definitely hope. “That is when you can cash in. You can put the emphasis on the older ball and you can put more pressure on Bumrah with the ball that’s 15 overs old as opposed to the brand new one. Like anything, if you just get through that tough period, then you can cash in.” SMITH’S BIZARRE WEAKNESS How do you get Steve Smith out? Yorkers? Bouncers? Target the stumps? In the channel on a good length? The numbers suggest not. According to the CricViz boffins, since the start of 2019 in Tests in Australia, Smith has averaged just 22 when pace bowlers stray down the leg side. During that same period, he has averaged 29.3 in the corridor outside off. Therefore, quicks have been more likely to dismiss the Australian by bowling down the leg side rather than targeting the corridor of uncertainty or even the stumps. In the first innings at Adelaide Oval, Smith was dismissed by Indian vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah after tickling a delivery down leg, with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant accepting the catch to his left. The New South Welshman threw his head back in disbelief before trudging back to the sheds. “(It is a) horrible way to get out. (That is) terrible for a batsman,” former Australian bowler Brett Lee said on Fox Cricket commentary. He later declared his belief that all the champion batter needed was for his luck to change, sensing he has a big innings in him this summer. Although Smith’s innings was brief, Lee was happy to see how still he was at the crease when facing Bumrah. “I mean, you play that shot 1000 times and you might nick one that fine. You have to play that shot. You are committed to play that stroke because you can’t let it hit you. It’s just bad luck,” he said. “He just needs (some) good luck. We saw the dismissal from the first innings in Perth where he stepped across and his head looked really still. Steve Smith is a busy cricketer. But it was that extra bit of movement he was doing walking across the crease. “But he looked like he tightened that up today and I thought he was in for a big one. It was a bit of bad luck, which happens, but you don’t change your style. That’s just the rub of the green.” However, former Indian coach Ravi Shastri, who mentored the touring side during historic triumphs in 2018/19 and 2020/21, revealed the dismissal wasn’t as unlucky as it appeared, stating he believed India was targeting the area. “You imagine the batsman feels he’s unlucky but it’s a plan. It might not have been that the plan that they originally wanted to go with, but (it is) not a surprise that they got him out in that way.” MITCH MAKES A MEAL OF IT It was the step that betrayed Mitch Marsh at Adelaide Oval on Saturday. Pitted against an old adversity in Ravindra Ashwin, the Western Australian played with no conviction whatsoever before effectively gifting his wicket with a false step and guilty look. There are a problems with this. The most pressing is that on all available evidence, Marsh may not have feathered the delivery from Ashwin to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant when on 9. Pant scarcely looked convinced. Travis Head told the umpire there was a gap between the bat and ball. And the rocking and rolling of the video footage and snicko provided no proof. The replays did, however, show Marsh making firm contact with his own pad. Was it a brain fade from the Bison? As Adam Gilchrist noted, all the chat mattered for nought. “You can’t give that out on the view, but Marsh was obviously convinced that he had nicked it,” the Fox Cricket analyst said. “But it doesn’t matter how much we dissect it, or what we think now. If you read the paper tomorrow, it will say ‘Caught Pant. Bowled Ashwin’.” WAITING ON THE ALL CLEAR India is sweating on Mohammed Shami’s fitness after the national pace bowling depth was tested on day two of the Adelaide Test. Harshit Rana was superb on Test debut in Perth last week, taking three wickets in the first innings as Australia suffered a horror collapse. However, the right-armed seamer has since taken 1-155 across two innings, conceding 5.38 runs per over in the South Australian capital on Saturday. While Rana has been impressive in bursts, India would have much preferred having veteran quick Shami in their starting XI. The 34-year-old is on the mend after sustaining a knee injury last year. He played a Ranji Trophy match for Bengal last month, taking seven wickets in a tense victory over Madhya Pradesh. Shami is currently representing Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament, picking up eight wickets in seven matches, but the BCCI is awaiting results from the National Cricket Academy before jetting him across to Australia. “The selection committee is waiting for the NCA’s fitness clearance report on Shami. He travelled to Bengaluru to give a fitness test,” a BCCI official said in a statement, as reported by the Indian Express. “He played the Ranji Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, where he looked good. His kit is also ready. We are just waiting for the approval from the NCA.” According to a Cricbuzz report, the best-case scenario would be Shami touching down ahead of the MCG Boxing Day Test – but that remains unlikely. Last week, Metro Vancouver released new population projections showing the region of 23 local governments is expected to grow, on average, by 50,000 new residents each year until 2050 when the total population reaches 4.21 million people. If that pace proves true, that’s a 1.7 per cent annual compound growth rate from 2021 when population reached about 2.6 million. Metro Vancouver stated the new growth rate is based on “evolving federal immigration policy, and trends in non-permanent residents.” Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the region was expecting 35,000 new residents annually to reach 3.8 million. The new analysis shows a low-growth scenario of 3.98 million people and a high-growth scenario of 4.39 million people. “I think the growth rate is a bit too much,” said Hurley. “I think that — and this is just my personal opinion, not Metro Vancouver's — until our infrastructure really starts to catch up and there's infrastructure deficit everywhere, including schools, hospitals, not just the Metro Vancouver infrastructure and other cities’ infrastructure, I just think it's a lot to be put on to municipalities,” said Hurley, who is also the mayor of Burnaby. And the federal government, which applies GST on new homes, “is not really stepping up to help out when it comes to infrastructure projects,” said Hurley. Opening Ad Astra gives Musk a chance to showcase his vision for education, and his support for the hands-on learning and problem solving that are a hallmark of his industrial companies. His public comments about learning frequently overlap with cultural concerns popular among conservatives and the Make America Great Again crowd, often focusing on what he sees as young minds being indoctrinated by teachers spewing left-wing propaganda. He has railed against diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and in August posted that “a lot of schools are teaching white boys to hate themselves.” Musk’s educational interests dovetail with his new role as Trump’s “first buddy.” The billionaire has pitched a role for himself that he — and now the incoming Trump administration — call “DOGE,” or the Department of Government Efficiency. Though it’s not an actual department, DOGE now posts on X, the social media platform that Musk owns. “The Department of Education spent over $1 billion promoting DEI in America’s schools,” the account posted Dec. 12. Back in Texas, Bastrop is quickly becoming a key Musk point of interest. The Boring Co., his tunneling venture, is based in an unincorporated area there. Across the road, SpaceX produces Starlink satellites at a 500,000-square-foot (46,000-square-meter) facility. Nearby, X is constructing a building for trust and safety workers. Musk employees, as well as the general public, can grab snacks at the Boring Bodega, a convenience store housed within Musk’s Hyperloop Plaza, which also contains a bar, candy shop and hair salon. Ad Astra is just a five-minute drive away. It seems to have been designed with the children of Musk’s employees — if not Musk’s own offspring — in mind. Musk has fathered at least 12 children, six of them in the last five years. “Ad Astra’s mission is to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in the next generation of problem solvers and builders,” reads the school’s website. A job posting on the website of the Montessori Institute of North Texas says “While their parents support the breakthroughs that expand the realm of human possibility, their children will grow into the next generation of innovators in a way that only authentic Montessori can provide.” The school has hired an executive director, according to documents Bloomberg obtained from Texas Health and Human Services. Ad Astra is located on 40 acres of land, according to the documents, which said a 4,000-square-foot house would be remodeled for the preschool. It isn’t uncommon for entrepreneurs to take an interest in education, according to Bill Gormley, a professor emeritus at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University who studies early childhood education. Charles Butt, the chairman of the Texas-based H-E-B grocery chain, has made public education a focus of his philanthropy. Along with other business and community leaders, Butt founded “Raise Your Hand Texas,” which advocates on school funding, teacher workforce and retention issues and fully funding pre-kindergarten. “Musk is not the only entrepreneur to recognize the value of preschool for Texas workers,” Gormley said. “A lot of politicians and business people get enthusiastic about education in general — and preschool in particular — because they salivate at the prospect of a better workforce.” Musk spent much of October actively campaigning for Trump’s presidential effort, becoming the most prolific donor of the election cycle. He poured at least $274 million into political groups in 2024, including $238 million to America PAC, the political action committee he founded. While the vast majority of money raised by America PAC came from Musk himself, it also had support from other donors. Betsy DeVos, who served as education secretary in Trump’s first term, donated $250,000, federal filings show. The Department of Education is already in the new administration’s cross hairs. Trump campaigned on the idea of disbanding the department and dismantling diversity initiatives, and he has also taken aim at transgender rights. “Rather than indoctrinating young people with inappropriate racial, sexual, and political material, which is what we’re doing now, our schools must be totally refocused to prepare our children to succeed in the world of work,” Trump wrote in Agenda 47, his campaign platform. Musk has three children with the musician Grimes and three with Shivon Zilis, who in the past was actively involved at Neuralink, his brain machine interface company. All are under the age of five. Musk took X, his son with Grimes, with him on a recent trip to Capitol Hill. After his visit, he shared a graphic that showed the growth of administrators in America’s public schools since 2000. Musk is a fan of hands-on education. During a Tesla earnings call in 2018, he talked about the need for more electricians as the electric-car maker scaled up the energy side of its business. On the Joe Rogan podcast in 2020, Musk said that “too many smart people go into finance and law.” “I have a lot of respect for people who work with their hands and we need electricians and plumbers and carpenters,” Musk said while campaigning for Trump in Pennsylvania in October. “That’s a lot more important than having incremental political science majors.” Ad Astra’s website says the cost of tuition will be initially subsidized, but in future years “tuition will be in line with local private schools that include an extended day program.” “I do think we need significant reform in education,” Musk said at a separate Trump campaign event. “The priority should be to teach kids skills that they will find useful later in life, and to leave any sort of social propaganda out of the classroom.” With assistance from Sophie Alexander and Kara Carlson. ©2024 Bloomberg News.
