NEW YORK (AP) — Same iconic statue, very different race. With two-way star Travis Hunter of Colorado and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty leading the field, these certainly aren't your typical Heisman Trophy contenders. Sure, veteran quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel from top-ranked Oregon and Cam Ward of No. 15 Miami are finalists for college football's most prestigious award as well, but the 90th annual ceremony coming up Saturday night at Lincoln Center in New York City offers a fresh flavor this year. To start with, none of the four are from the powerhouse Southeastern Conference, which has produced four of the past five Heisman winners — two each from Alabama and LSU. Jeanty, who played his home games for a Group of Five team on that peculiar blue turf in Idaho more than 2,100 miles from Manhattan, is the first running back even invited to the Heisman party since 2017. After leading the country with 2,497 yards rushing and 29 touchdowns, he joined quarterback Kellen Moore (2010) as the only Boise State players to be named a finalist. “The running back position has been overlooked for a while now," said Jeanty, who plans to enter the 2025 NFL draft. "There's been a lot of great running backs before me that should have been here in New York, so to kind of carry on the legacy of the running back position I think is great. ... I feel as if I'm representing the whole position.” With the votes already in, all four finalists spent Friday conducting interviews and sightseeing in the Big Apple. They were given custom, commemorative watches to mark their achievement. “I'm not a watch guy, but I like it,” said Hunter, flashing a smile. The players also took photos beneath the massive billboards in Times Square and later posed with the famous Heisman Trophy, handed out since 1935 to the nation's most outstanding performer. Hunter, the heavy favorite, made sure not to touch it yet. A dominant player on both offense and defense who rarely comes off the field, the wide receiver/cornerback is a throwback to generations gone by and the first full-time, true two-way star in decades. On offense, he had 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns this season to help the 20th-ranked Buffaloes (9-3) earn their first bowl bid in four years. On defense, he made four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and forced a critical fumble that secured an overtime victory against Baylor. Hunter played 688 defensive snaps and 672 more on offense — the only Power Four conference player with 30-plus snaps on both sides of the ball, according to Colorado research. Call him college football’s answer to baseball unicorn Shohei Ohtani. “I think I laid the ground for more people to come in and go two ways,” Hunter said. “It starts with your mindset. If you believe you can do it, then you'll be able to do it. And also, I do a lot of treatment. I keep up with my body. I get a lot of recovery.” Hunter is Colorado's first Heisman finalist in 30 years. The junior from Suwanee, Georgia, followed flashy coach Deion Sanders from Jackson State, an HBCU that plays in the lower level FCS, to the Rocky Mountains and has already racked up a staggering combination of accolades this week, including The Associated Press player of the year. Hunter also won the Walter Camp Award as national player of the year, along with the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award for best wide receiver. “It just goes to show that I did what I had to do,” Hunter said. Next, he'd like to polish off his impressive hardware collection by becoming the second Heisman Trophy recipient in Buffaloes history, after late running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994. “I worked so hard for this moment, so securing the Heisman definitely would set my legacy in college football,” Hunter said. “Being here now is like a dream come true.” Jeanty carried No. 8 Boise State (12-1) to a Mountain West Conference championship that landed the Broncos the third seed in this year's College Football Playoff. They have a first-round bye before facing the SMU-Penn State winner in the Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal on New Year’s Eve. The 5-foot-9, 215-pound junior from Jacksonville, Florida, won the Maxwell Award as college football’s top player and the Doak Walker Award for best running back. Jeanty has five touchdown runs of at least 70 yards and has rushed for the fourth-most yards in a season in FBS history — topping the total of 115 teams this year. He needs 132 yards to break the FBS record set by Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders at Oklahoma State in 1988. In a pass-happy era, however, Jeanty is trying to become the first running back to win the Heisman Trophy since Derrick Henry for Alabama nine years ago. In fact, quarterbacks have snagged the prize all but four times this century. Gabriel, an Oklahoma transfer, led Oregon (13-0) to a Big Ten title in its first season in the league and the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. The steady senior from Hawaii passed for 3,558 yards and 28 touchdowns with six interceptions. His 73.2% completion rate ranks second in the nation, and he's attempting to join quarterback Marcus Mariota (2014) as Ducks players to win the Heisman Trophy. “I think all the memories start to roll back in your mind,” Gabriel said. Ward threw for 4,123 yards and led the nation with a school-record 36 touchdown passes for the high-scoring Hurricanes (10-2) after transferring from Washington State. The senior from West Columbia, Texas, won the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Year award and is looking to join QBs Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992) as Miami players to go home with the Heisman. “I just think there's a recklessness that you have to play with at the quarterback position,” Ward said. Arsenal put on one of the best performances of the Champions League so far to thrash Portuguese side Sporting 5-1 away from home. ( More Football News ) Gabriel Martinelli put Mikel Arteta's side ahead after just seven minutes and they hardly looked back from that point. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Magalhaes added a second and third respectively before half-time as the visitors did their best to kill the game as a contest. BY Stats Perform Things got a little more competitive when Goncalo Inacio pulled one back for the hosts within two minutes of the restart, but a Bukayo Saka penalty in the 65th minute soon quelled any chance of a comeback. Leandro Trossard got the fifth eight minutes from time after coming off the bench to help Arsenal move above Sporting into seventh place in the 36-team league. Sporting, meanwhile, are one place back on goal difference. With his assist for Kai Havertz tonight, Bukayo Saka is already on 14 goal involvements for the season (all comps). The result matched that of the scoreline they managed against Inter Milan in 2003. It is a result that is made more impressive given that it is Sporting's first defeat at their own ground in 14 matches in all competitions, and the only home game they have failed to win this season. Most of what we know about humans living to very old age is based on faulty data, including the science behind the " blue zones " famous for having a high proportion of people over 100, according to one researcher. The desire to live as long as possible has driven a booming lifestyle industry selling supplements, books, tech and tips to those wanting to learn the secrets of the world's oldest people. But Saul Justin Newman, a researcher at University College London 's Centre for Longitudinal Studies, told AFP that most extreme old age data "is junk to a really shocking degree". Newman's research, which is currently being peer-reviewed, looked at data about centenarians and supercentenarians-people who live to 100 and 110-in the US, Italy, England, France and Japan. Contrary to what one might expect, he found that supercentenarians tended to come from areas with poor health, high levels of poverty-and bad record-keeping . Just one of many examples is Sogen Kato, who was thought to be Japan's oldest living person until his mummified remains were discovered in 2010. It turned out he had been dead since 1978. His family was arrested for collecting three decades of pensions payments. The government then launched a review which found that 82% of Japan's centenarians-230,000 people-were missing or dead. "Their paperwork is in order, they're just dead," Newman said. This illustrates the problem Newman has sought to shine a light on-that confirming ages in this field involves triple-checking very old documents that could have been wrong from the start. The industry that has popped up around blue zones is one "symptom" of this problem, he said. Blue zones are regions around the world where people are said to live disproportionately longer and healthier lives. The term was first used in 2004 by researchers referring to the Italian island of Sardinia. The following year, National Geographic reporter Dan Buettner wrote a story that added the Japanese islands of Okinawa and the Californian city of Loma Linda. Buettner admitted to the New York Times in October that he only included Loma Linda because his editor told him: "You need to find America's blue zone." The reporter teamed up with some demographers to create the Blue Zones lifestyle brand, and they added Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula and the Greek island of Ikaria to the list. However, as seen in Japan, later government records have cast doubt on old age data in these regions. In Costa Rica, 2008 research showed that 42% of centenarians had "lied about their age" in an earlier census, Newman said. For Greece, he found 2012 data suggesting that 72% of the country's centenarians were dead or imaginary. "They're only alive on pension day," Newman said. Several prominent blue zone researchers wrote a rebuttal earlier this year, calling Newman's work "ethically and academically irresponsible". They accused Newman of referring to broader regions of Japan and Sardinia when the blue zones were smaller areas. The demographers also emphasised they had "meticulously validated" the ages of supercentenarians in blue zones, double-checking historical records and registries dating back to the 1800s. Newman said this argument illustrated his point. "If you start with a birth certificate that's wrong, that gets copied to everything, and you get perfectly consistent, perfectly wrong records," he said. The only "way out of this quagmire" is to physically measure people's ages, Newman said. Steve Horvath, an ageing researcher at the University of California, told AFP he had created a new technique called a methylation clock "for the express purpose of validating claims of exceptional longevity". The clock can "reliably detect instances of severe fraud", such as when a child assumes their parent's identity, but cannot yet tell the difference between a 115- and 120-year-old, he said. So what can people at home take away from this debate? "If you want to live a long time, step number one: don't buy anything," Newman said. "Listen to your GP (doctor), do some exercise, don't drink, don't smoke-that's it." (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )Chamisa Under Siege As Court Persecutes His Top Aide

NoneThe gaming world was thrown into a frenzy yesterday with the surprise announcement of Bloodborne 2 at the PlayStation Showcase. While many fans rejoiced at the prospect of returning to the gothic horror of Yharnam, the reveal trailer has sparked a heated debate, dividing the community on whether this sequel is a dream come true or a potential nightmare. FromSoftware, the acclaimed developers behind the original Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series, are known for their challenging yet rewarding gameplay, intricate world-building, and cryptic storytelling. 1 However, the trailer for Bloodborne 2 has left fans with more questions than answers, fueling speculation and anxieties in equal measure. The trailer, clocking in at just under two minutes, showcased a grim and desolate world, ravaged by a mysterious plague. Familiar elements like gothic architecture, grotesque creatures, and blood-soaked weaponry were present, but a noticeable shift in tone and aesthetics has many concerned. Some fans have praised the darker, more oppressive atmosphere, while others worry it strays too far from the Lovecraftian horror that defined the original. The combat, a core element of the Soulsborne experience, appeared faster and more aggressive, incorporating new weapons and abilities. This change has been met with both excitement and apprehension, with some welcoming the evolution of the combat system while others fear it might sacrifice the deliberate and methodical approach that made Bloodborne unique. A New Hunter, a New Era? One of the most significant points of contention revolves around the apparent absence of the Hunter, the protagonist from the original Bloodborne . The trailer introduces a new character, clad in unfamiliar attire and wielding a different arsenal. This has led to widespread speculation about the sequel’s connection to its predecessor. Is this a direct continuation of the story, a prequel exploring Yharnam’s past, or perhaps a standalone narrative set in the same universe? The lack of clarity has left fans grappling with uncertainty, with some eager to embark on a new adventure while others yearn to revisit the beloved Hunter and unravel the remaining mysteries of Yharnam. Adding fuel to the fire is the perceived departure from the original’s art style. While the gothic architecture remains, the color palette seems muted and desaturated, leaning towards a more bleak and oppressive aesthetic. Some argue this complements the grim narrative hinted at in the trailer, while others feel it loses the vibrant, almost ethereal quality that made Bloodborne’s world so captivating. The character designs have also drawn criticism, with some of the new creatures appearing less inspired and more generic compared to the original’s unique and terrifying bestiary. Combat Evolved: Innovation or Betrayal? The trailer showcased glimpses of the combat system, and the changes are evident. The new protagonist appears more agile and aggressive, utilizing a wider range of movement and attack options. New weapons, including a transforming scythe and a pair of clawed gauntlets, were also featured, hinting at a more diverse and dynamic combat experience. While some fans are excited by the prospect of a faster and more fluid combat system, others worry it might compromise the strategic depth and deliberate pacing that defined Bloodborne’s gameplay . The original game demanded patience, precision, and a deep understanding of enemy attack patterns. The fear of losing accumulated “Blood Echoes” (the game’s currency and experience points) encouraged a cautious and methodical approach. The trailer’s emphasis on speed and aggression has raised concerns that Bloodborne 2 might cater to a more action-oriented audience, potentially alienating fans who appreciated the original’s challenging but rewarding learning curve. The Ghost of Miyazaki: A Directorial Shift? Adding another layer of complexity to the debate is the absence of Hidetaka Miyazaki, the visionary director behind Bloodborne and other FromSoftware classics. While Miyazaki is overseeing the project in a supervisory role, the directorial reins have been passed to a new, yet-to-be-revealed director. This has understandably caused anxiety among fans who consider Miyazaki’s creative genius to be integral to the Soulsborne experience. Miyazaki’s games are renowned for their intricate level design, interconnected world-building, and subtle storytelling that encourages player interpretation and analysis. The fear is that a new director, even under Miyazaki’s guidance, might not capture the essence of what made Bloodborne so special. However, others argue that a fresh perspective could inject new life into the franchise, potentially leading to innovative ideas and unexpected twists. A Divided Community: The Wait for Answers The announcement of Bloodborne 2 has ignited passionate discussions across online forums, social media platforms, and gaming communities. Reddit threads are filled with debates about the trailer’s implications, with users dissecting every frame and analyzing every detail. YouTube is flooded with reaction videos and analysis, with content creators offering their perspectives on the sequel’s potential and pitfalls. The division within the fanbase is palpable. Some are cautiously optimistic, hoping that FromSoftware will deliver another masterpiece that builds upon the foundation of its predecessor. Others are more skeptical, expressing concerns about the changes showcased in the trailer and the potential impact on the core gameplay experience. The lack of concrete information and the ambiguity surrounding the sequel’s narrative and gameplay mechanics have only fueled the uncertainty and amplified the divide. Here’s a breakdown of the key points of contention: Looking Ahead: Hope and Trepidation Despite the anxieties and uncertainties, there’s an undeniable sense of excitement surrounding Bloodborne 2. The prospect of returning to a world inspired by gothic horror and Lovecraftian lore is enticing, and FromSoftware’s track record of delivering challenging and rewarding gaming experiences instills confidence. However, the developer faces a significant challenge in meeting the high expectations set by Bloodborne . The original game wasn’t just a critical and commercial success; it was a cultural phenomenon that resonated with players on a deep level. It’s understandable that fans are protective of its legacy and wary of any changes that might compromise its unique identity. Ultimately, only time will tell whether Bloodborne 2 will live up to its potential and unite the divided fanbase. Until then, the speculation and debate will continue, fueled by every new piece of information and every cryptic teaser released by FromSoftware. One thing is certain: the world is watching, eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the Bloodborne saga.Bill Belichick gets epic College Football welcome in North Carolina's Family Guy-inspired video
Segregation academies across the South get millions in taxpayer dollarsNoneA former New England Patriots head coach is on the move in the football world. The New England Patriots are tied for the most Super Bowl victories in NFL history, and they collected all of them with one head coach at the helm, that being Bill Belichick. The 72-year-old walked away from the club just 15 wins away from being the winningest coach in NFL history. While Belichick doesn’t officially hold the record, as of now, he is highly regarded as the greatest head coach in league history — while also having a great reputation as a general manager from his time wearing both hats for the Patriots. Recently, Belichick took a college football coaching job at the University of North Carolina — which will keep him away from the NFL coaching gig for the time being. According to Bill Simmons, coaching the 2025 Patriots would have been the perfect job for him, though. Simmons claims the 2025 Patriots would have been perfect for Belichick The Patriots are currently 3-10 . They haven’t found great success in the post-Tom Brady era , and even less success since they parted ways with Belichick. However, they finally have a young quarterback and rising squad with Drake Maye under center , conveniently a product of UNC. According to Simmons, the best job that Belichick could have taken before next year would have been the Patriots. “The irony of all of this is the best job for him, I think, would have been the Patriots for 2025,” Simmons claimed. “With like, some pieces they desperately needed a stable hand and they have an awesome quarterback, which is the thing he didn’t have for six years. “The funniest thing about all of this, is that that was the perfect job for him but it never would have happened.” In nine games, Maye has thrown for 1,696 yards and 11 touchdowns with eight interceptions. He’s far from perfect, but his inaugural season has shown the potential he has in the NFL as a signal-caller — which is incredibly important for a club. Still, Belichick is taking over the Tar Heels for a new challenge. Belichick is looking for success in Chapel Hill at the collegiate level For years, the difference between the NFL and college football was substantial. In recent years, that line has been blurred. Recruiting was relationship-based. Players had four, maybe five years to develop, and it was a pipeline for the NFL. It was a part of the football system. Now, the college football world is an extension of pro football. It’s a four-year professional league. However, there are no regulations to the transfer portals and NIL, making it a free-for-all free agency. Belichick moving to college football was going to be a challenge as is, and now he’s facing murky waters and blurred lines. However, he’s bringing a professional approach. He can potentially set some guidelines in the new era of college football and what it means to run a program — which could leave a mark on a second level of football, something that might have been enticing as he made the move. Federal Police last Thursday formally accused Bolsonaro and 36 other people of attempting a coup. They sent their 884-page report to the Supreme Court, which lifted the seal. “The evidence collected throughout the investigation shows unequivocally that then-President Jair Messias Bolsonaro planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organization aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law, which did not take place due to reasons unrelated to his desire,” the document said. At another point, it says: “Bolsonaro had full awareness and active participation.” Bolsonaro, who had repeatedly alleged without evidence that the country's electronic voting system was prone to fraud, called a meeting in December 2022, during which he presented a draft decree to the commanders of the three divisions of the armed forces, according to the police report, signed by four investigators. The decree would have launched an investigation into suspicions of fraud and crimes related to the October 2022 vote, and suspended the powers of the nation's electoral court. The navy’s commander stood ready to comply, but those from the army and air force objected to any plan that prevented Lula’s inauguration, the report said. Those refusals are why the plan did not go ahead, according to witnesses who spoke to investigators. Bolsonaro never signed the decree to set the final stage of the alleged plan into action. Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or awareness of any plot to keep him in power or oust his leftist rival and successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. “No one is going to do a coup with a reserve general and half a dozen other officers. What is being said is absurd. For my part, there has never been any discussion of a coup,” Bolsonaro told journalists in Brazil’s capital Brasilia on Monday. “If someone came to discuss a coup with me, I’d say, that’s fine, but the day after, how does the world view us?” he added. “The word ‘coup’ has never been in my dictionary.” The top court has passed the report on to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet. He will decide whether to formally charge Bolsonaro and put him on trial, or toss the investigation. Ahead of the 2022 election, Bolsonaro repeatedly alleged that the election system, which does not use paper ballots, could be tampered with. The top electoral court later ruled that he had abused his power to cast unfounded doubt on the voting system, and ruled him ineligible for office until 2030 . Still, he has maintained that he will stand as a candidate in the 2026 race. Since Bolsonaro left office, he has been targeted by several investigations, all of which he has chalked up to political persecution. Federal Police have accused him of smuggling diamond jewelry into Brazil without properly declaring them and directing a subordinate to falsify his and others’ COVID-19 vaccination statuses . Authorities are also investigating whether he incited the Jan. 8, 2022 riot in which his followers ransacked the Supreme Court and presidential palace in Brasilia, seeking to prompt intervention by the army that would oust Lula from power. Bolsonaro had left for the United States days before Lula’s inauguration on Jan. 1, 2023 and stayed there three months, keeping a low profile. The police report unsealed Tuesday alleges he was seeking to avoid possible imprisonment related to the coup plot, and also await the uprising that took place a week later.
