Hegseth makes play to win hard-to-get GOP centristsDoctor reveals the beloved food that will help prevent holiday hangovers By EMILY LEFROY FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 15:23 EST, 24 December 2024 | Updated: 16:14 EST, 24 December 2024 e-mail 8 shares 7 View comments Good news for those who have the tendency to over indulge over the holidays: a good cheeseboard may stave off dreaded hangovers. A doctor has claimed that enjoying some good cheese and crackers before enjoying some festive drinks may reduce odds of feeling a bit dusty the next morning. Dr Neena Chandrasekaran, a medic who specializes in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, shared her findings to TikTok , in series called: Things they don’t tell you. 'If you are going for a night out on the town and you are going to drink alcohol , eating cheese before drinking alcohol can decrease your risk of having a hangover,' t he 34-year-old explained in the now-viral video. The Florida-based doctor said it's because cheese has a lot of protein, fat, and complex carbs that can coat the stomach, which decreases the absorption of alcohol. 'Cheese can help the body metabolize alcohol better and prevent liver damage,' she told viewers. 'Cheese also replenishes nutrients because it is full of B vitamin and calcium – these specific nutrients are depleted from the body when drinking alcohol,' Neena added. The doctor added that the ingredients in cheese can help your body's function while you're drunk. Dr Neena Chandrasekaran, a medic who specializes in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, claimed that eating cheese will prevent hangovers 'Calcium, which can be depleted through alcohol, specifically helps to improve nerve and muscle function, and B vitamins are needed for energy and metabolism,' she explained in the clip, which has been viewed over 2.5 million times. 'Just remember, no alcohol is better than any alcohol,' the doctor advised. 'However, if you are going to drink, try to remember to try some cheese before alcohol.' Viewers were thrilled by the doctor's claims, and took to the comments section to share their excitement. 'Cheese as a cure? Say less,' one viewer laughed. 'Eat cheese before my Christmas party [taking notes emoji],'chimed in another. Someone else commented: 'NOW I understand the wine and cheese era.' 'Will pizza work?' another asked. She shared her findings to TikTok , in series called: Things they don’t tell you 'Cheese can help the body metabolize alcohol better and prevent liver damage,' the doctor explained (stock image) Viewers were thrilled by the doctor's claims, and took to the comments section to share their excitement 'I’ve never had a hangover... and I’m 97 percent cheese at this point so that adds up actually,' added another user. Someone else joked: 'Like I needed an excuse to eat cheese.' 'I won't be hungover over the entire Christmas period then,' said one viewer. Another added: 'I love cheese - charcuterie before debauchery folks.' A study published in September 2023 that tested probiotic cheese with two specific bacteria found the probiotics in cheese helped speed up alcohol metabolism by boosting key liver enzymes (alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase). The researchers noted it also activates important pathways that reduce fat buildup in the liver and reduce inflammation, which can happen when you drink too much. Relaxed modeDalton Knecht's hot streak for the Los Angeles Lakers continued on Thursday in the team's 119-118 loss to the Orlando Magic. Despite the loss, Knecht played well and scored 17 points while making 42.9% of his 3-point shots. The rookie guard only scored over 10 points in a game once in his first 10 games but has now scored 14 or more in five straight games. When the Lakers drafted him with the 17th pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft, it surprised many that he fell so far. ESPN's Brian Windhorst decided to reveal the real reason why teams weren't keen on using a high draft pick on him. Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images "Scouts are skeptical about three-year college players, turned off by almost all four-year college players and usually slam the notebook on the mere idea of drafting a five-year college player like Knecht," Windhorst wrote in a Friday column. "Teams draft on upside and 23-year-olds and upside don't go together, which is why scouts lowered Knecht on their draft boards. "But the Lakers saw impressive measurables at the draft combine: a 6-foot-9 wingspan, a 39-inch vertical and the fastest shuttle run in the field. As one longtime talent evaluator pointed out: Knecht led the SEC in scoring last season, and the list of players who have done that -- Pete Maravich, Bernard King, Shaquille O'Neal and Dominique Wilkins, among them -- should've earned him more respect on draft night." It's easy to under why teams would be apprehensive to draft a 23-year-old rookie, but the Lakers have a short window to be successful as LeBron James turns 40 in December. NonePresident-elect Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to let him negotiate a deal to save TikTok from an imminent US ban. In an filed to the court, Trump says he “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office,” and that he “alone possesses the consummate dealmaking expertise, the electoral mandate, and the political will to negotiate a resolution to save the platform.” Last week, the Supreme Court that a bill passed by Congress banning TikTok on national security grounds violates the First Amendment. The bill gives wide latitude to the president to delay its enforcement if there’s progress being made towards a deal ensuring TikTok isn’t fully controlled by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. But the deadline for that determination is January 19th — one day before Trump is set to assume the presidency. In his Supreme Court filing, Trump asks for the bill’s January 19th deadline to be stayed, arguing that the deal he’d negotiate “would obviate the need for this Court to decide the historically challenging First Amendment question presented here on the current, highly expedited basis.” He argues that having over 14 million followers on TikTok, along with his ownership of Truth Social, gives him unique ability to “evaluate TikTok’s importance as a unique medium for freedom of expression, including core political speech.” He also cites Brazil’s temporary ban of Elon Musk’s X as an example of “the historic dangers presented” by banning TikTok. While Trump pushed for a TikTok ban during his first term, he changed his tune after his campaign successfully used the platform during the 2024 election. He recently at Mar-a-Lago and that “maybe we gotta keep this sucker around for a little while.”
Monthly allowance increases for newborn children, elderly and disabled people are expected to be implemented on Oct 1 next year, according to Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS). Speaking on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Government House on Tuesday, the minister said the last cabinet meeting approved in principle an increase of the current monthly allowances for the three vulnerable groups. The aim is to provide a universal subsidy of 600 baht per month for every newborn child until they are six years old. The cash handout will not be limited to families with low incomes that have earnings not exceeding 100,000 baht per year. "That income threshold would be removed, and the support will also extend to women in the fourth month of pregnancy," said the minister. People aged 60-69 who now receive a monthly allowance of 600 baht per month would receive 700 baht, while those aged 70-79 who now get 700 baht will receive 850 baht. Senior citizens aged 80-89 will have their allowance raised from 800 baht to 1,000 baht. And those aged 90 or older will have a new allowance of 1,250 baht, up from 1,000 baht, he said. The ministry wants to ensure the cost of living for the elderly is sufficient given the current situation, he said. People with disabilities who today receive a monthly allowance of between 800-1,000 baht, depending on their condition, will receive a flat rate of 1,000 baht. Mr Varawut said the ministry will work with more organisations to find those who deserve but do not have a disabled person ID card to help them obtain one so they can receive the allowance and gain fair access to their other due rights. The ministry will prepare data on each of the three groups -- children, the elderly, and the disabled -- to obtain the budget required for the operation. It will work with the Budget Bureau and Comptroller General's Department of the Ministry of Finance to determine the source of funds. "We expect that at the beginning of fiscal year 2026, each target group of vulnerable people will receive the new allowance rates," Mr Varawut said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra marked the occasion by saying the government believes in providing equal opportunities for all. "In recognition of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I want to reassure everyone that the government will provide for their basic needs so everyone with a disability can live a happy, fulfilling life and reach their full potential," she said.

Two Canadian Cabinet ministers met with President-elect Donald Trump 's nominee for commerce secretary at Mar-a-Lago on Friday as Canada tries to avoid sweeping tariffs when Trump takes office. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly met with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, as well as North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum , Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department. Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian products if Canada does not stem what he calls a flow of migrants and fentanyl into the United States — even though far fewer of each cross into the U.S. from Canada than from Mexico , which Trump has also threatened. “Minister LeBlanc and Minister Joly had a positive, productive meeting at Mar-a-Lago with Howard Lutnick and Doug Burgum, as a follow-up to the dinner between the Prime Minister and President Trump last month,” said Jean-Sébastien Comeau, a spokesman for LeBlanc. Comeau said both ministers outlined the measures in Canada's billion-dollar plan to increase security at the border and reiterated “the shared commitment to strengthen border security as well as combat the harm caused by fentanyl to save Canadian and American lives.” Comeau said Lutnick and Burgum agreed to relay the information to Trump. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Further discussions are expected in the coming weeks. Joly will also have dinner with U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham on Friday. Trump has been trolling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on social media in recent weeks by calling him the Governor of the 51st state. Flows of migrants and seizures of drugs are vastly different at the U.S.’s two land borders. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border during the last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Most of the fentanyl reaching the U.S. — where it causes about 70,000 overdose deaths annually — is made by Mexican drug cartels using precursor chemicals smuggled from Asia. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol reported 1.53 million encounters with migrants at the southwest border with Mexico between October 2023 and September 2024. That compares to 23,721 encounters at the Canadian border during that time. Trump has also made an issue of the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, erroneously calling it a subsidy. Canada’s ambassador to Washington, Kirsten Hillman, has said the U.S. had a $75 billion trade deficit with Canada last year. But she noted a third of what Canada sells into the U.S. are energy exports and said there is a deficit when oil prices are high. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports and 85% of U.S. electricity imports are from Canada. Alberta alone sends 4.3 million barrel s of oil per day to the U.S which tends to consume about 20 million barrels a day. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian dollars ($2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Trudeau has told Trump that Americans would also suffer if the president-elect follows through on a plan to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products. The FDA expanded the indication for setmelanotide (Imcivree) to include children as young as 2 years with syndromic or monogenic obesity due to Bardet-Biedl syndrome or genetically confirmed pro-opiomelanocortin, said maker Rhythm Pharmaceuticals. Among patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy receiving bremelanotide in the small phase IIb BREAKOUT study, 71% achieved greater than 30% reduction in urine protein to creatinine ratio at 6 months, Palatin Technologies announced. In a draft recommendation, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said that older adults should not take vitamin D and calcium supplements for the primary prevention of falls and fractures. Even after surgery, patients with Cushing's syndrome have an altered gut microbiome, "indicating a possible target for additional probiotic interventions to accelerate convergence to a healthy microbiome," authors of a longitudinal analysis concluded. A Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) investigation showed Bhullar failed to report $7,485,246 in taxable income for the years 2011, 2012 and 2014.
