The 38-year-old information technology worker from New Mexico had a prescription. Her pharmacy had the drugs in stock. And her health insurance covered all but $25 to $50 of the monthly cost. For Griffin, the hardest part of using the new drugs wasn’t access. It was finding out that the much-hyped medications didn’t really work for her. “I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” said Griffin, who watches her diet, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. “I’ve done everything right with no success. It’s discouraging.” In clinical trials, most participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro to treat obesity lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight — up to 50 pounds or more in many cases. But roughly 10% to 15% of patients in those trials were “nonresponders” who lost less than 5% of their body weight. Now that millions of people have used the drugs, several obesity experts told The Associated Press that perhaps 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not respond well to the medications. It's a little-known consequence of the obesity drug boom, according to doctors who caution eager patients not to expect one-size-fits-all results. “It's all about explaining that different people have different responses,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity expert at Massachusetts General Hospital The drugs are known as GLP-1 receptor agonists because they mimic a hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1. Genetics, hormones and variability in how the brain regulates energy can all influence weight — and a person's response to the drugs, Stanford said. Medical conditions such as sleep apnea can prevent weight loss, as can certain common medications, such as antidepressants, steroids and contraceptives. “This is a disease that stems from the brain,” said Stanford. “The dysfunction may not be the same” from patient to patient. Despite such cautions, patients are often upset when they start getting the weekly injections but the numbers on the scale barely budge. “It can be devastating,” said Dr. Katherine Saunders, an obesity expert at Weill Cornell Medicine and co-founder of the obesity treatment company FlyteHealth. “With such high expectations, there’s so much room for disappointment.” That was the case for Griffin, who has battled obesity since childhood and hoped to shed 70 pounds using Wegovy. The drug helped reduce her appetite and lowered her risk of diabetes, but she saw little change in weight. “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” she said. “You want it to work like it does for everybody else.” The medications are typically prescribed along with eating behavior and lifestyle changes. It’s usually clear within weeks whether someone will respond to the drugs, said Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Weight loss typically begins right away and continues as the dosage increases. For some patients, that just doesn't happen. For others, side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea force them to halt the medications, Dushay said. In such situations, patients who were counting on the new drugs to pare pounds may think they’re out of options. “I tell them: It's not game over,” Dushay said. Trying a different version of the new class of drugs may help. Griffin, who didn't respond well to Wegovy, has started using Zepbound, which targets an additional hormone pathway in the body. After three months of using the drug, she has lost 7 pounds. “I'm hoping it's slow and steady,” she said. Other people respond well to older drugs, the experts said. Changing diet, exercise, sleep and stress habits can also have profound effects. NoneLook at the numbers, and it’s easy to assume Iowa State did whatever it wanted in its matchup against Colorado a month ago. Certainly in one sense, the Cyclones did just that while routing the Buffaloes 99-71 in both teams’ final game of the Maui Invitational on Nov. 27. CU head coach Tad Boyle, he of the defense-first ethos, typically is the last person who will defend a shoddy defensive effort by his club. Yet in that instance, it was the Buffaloes’ inability to protect the ball that led to their defensive demise. CU will get another shot at the opportunistic Cyclones on Monday, as the Buffs host No. 3 Iowa State in the Big 12 Conference opener. “You look at giving up 99 points and what they shot against us. But to be honest, it wasn’t our half-court defense,” Boyle said. “It was the 37 points off our turnovers, and the 14 points off second chance on offensive rebounds. You put those together, and it’s 51 of their 99 are a result of us not boxing out and getting our (butts) kicked on the boards, or not taking care of the ball on offense. And Iowa State, that’s what they feed on. They feed off of turning turnovers into layups and easy baskets. “When our half-court defense got set, we weren’t that bad. I’m not saying we were great defensively. But we weren’t as bad as the score would indicate.” Not only did CU surrender a season-high point total, but a defense that hasn’t allowed any other opponent to shoot 50% surrendered opponent season-highs in field goal percentage (.603), 3-point percentage (.440), made free throws (18) and assists (18) against the Cyclones. NoneAn ethnic minority army in northeastern Myanmar says that it is willing to hold talks with the country’s military junta, acknowledging the Chinese government’s efforts to broker a settlement. In a statement released on Telegram late on Monday, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) said that it wanted a halt to the military’s air strikes in regions under its control. It also expressed its desire for negotiations and its appreciation for Beijing’s effort to bring the two sides together. “Our civilians are suffering from air strikes and other difficulties. So, we need to find a way out,” TNLA spokesperson Lway Yay Oo said, according to Reuters . The TNLA is a member of the Three Brotherhood Alliance of ethnic armed groups, which last year launched a coordinated offensive known as Operation 1027. In the year since, the Alliance has succeeded in seizing large swathes of territory in northern Shan State, as well as in Rakhine State in the country’s west. This has included long stretches of the border between Shan State and China, as well as major conduits of the overland trade between the two nations. In early August, the TNLA’s partner, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), succeeded in capturing Lashio , the de facto capital of northern Shan State and the seat of the Myanmar military’s Northeast Regional Command. The loss of the Regional Command was unprecedented in the history of Myanmar’s armed forces and marked the junta’s most humiliating defeat since the February 2021 coup. These advances brought the Alliance and allied People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) one step closer to launching large-scale attacks into Myanmar’s central dry zone. In the months since, as the Myanmar military’s battlefield fortunes have declined further, Beijing has intensified its pressure on the TNLA and MNDAA to halt their attacks and return to the negotiating table. It has closed border gates adjoining territories controlled by the two groups and also used its considerable influence with the United Wa State Army, arguably the most powerful ethnic armed group in Myanmar, to deny these other groups access to electricity, water, internet connections, and other supplies. Earlier this month, reports emerged that Chinese authorities had detained the MNDAA’s commander , Peng Daxun, and placed him under house arrest in Yunnan, in a bid to force him to withdraw his forces from Lashio. At the same time, fearing that the junta’s collapse would be deleterious for China’s economic and strategic interests in the country, Beijing has stiffened its support for the military regime. Last month, China took the notable step of inviting coup leader Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing to China for the first time since the February 2021 coup. This month brought reports that China has proposed the establishment of a “joint security company” with the military junta in order to ensure the safety of Chinese projects and personnel in the country. Chinese officials have also thrown their support behind the junta’s planned “election” as a potential mechanism for the resolution of the civil war. On November 22, Myanmar Now reported that China was preparing to lend 1 billion yuan ($138 million) to the military regime, a portion of which is earmarked for a national census ahead of the election, which the military administration hopes to hold sometime in 2025. The remainder will support infrastructure projects and surveillance systems. The Chinese goal appears to be to end the fighting and create a stable compact that will allow trade to start flowing again, and for progress to resume on China-backed infrastructure projects. Such a goal would foreclose both the country’s descent into anarchy and the possibility of the National Unity Government (NUG), which Beijing reportedly views as aligned with the West, establishing itself in a position of prominence. Yesterday, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said that the Chinese government opposed any outbreak of war and chaos in Myanmar and urged all parties to cease fighting and resolve conflicts through dialogue. “China will continue to actively promote peace talks and provide support and assistance to the best of its ability to the peace process in northern Myanmar,” the spokesperson said, Reuters reported. The TNLA’s announcement that it is willing to put down its weapons, at least for now, suggests that the Chinese effort to alter the trajectory of Myanmar’s conflict is having some effect. But it remains unclear how far, and for how long, this influence can keep the conflict at bay. While they have established relationships with Chinese officials across the border in Yunnan, neither the MNDAA nor TNLA are Chinese proxies, and both have their own political goals to which they presumably remain committed. In September, under apparent Chinese pressure, the MNDAA issued a statement dissociating itself from the NUG and said that “it would cease fighting immediately and cooperate with China to solve Myanmar’s conflicts through negotiation.” At the same time, the statement said that the MNDAA reserved its right to maintain its autonomy and ensure its self-defense, and has since resisted Chinese insistence that it withdraw from Lashio, the occupation of which provides a thick security buffer around its core territories to the north. If swallowed, they can become stuck and cause serious injury or death if not removed. • Watch out for water beads and magnets in toys . Expanding water beads and rare earth magnets are inappropriate for those who may ingest them. Strong magnets can stick together in the intestines and trigger a medical emergency. Thirty hours into my Fantasian Neo Dimension playthrough, I found myself in a surreal landscape, a twisted amalgamation dotted by ghostly white corruption known as Mechteria. My Dimengeon device, a contraption that allows me to “bank” monster encounters, was nearly overflowing, so I had to take out over 40 enemies in a single battle. I continued to advance, thinking that the threats had been eliminated, yet numerous encounters piled up within mere seconds. Fantasian Neo Dimension certainly presents a challenge, even for the most ardent fans of turn-based role-playing games, such as myself. Developed by Mistwalker and released in two parts for Apple Arcade back in 2021, Fantasian is a collaboration between two giants of the industry: Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and renowned composer Nobuo Uematsu. Now, this new rerelease for Windows PC and consoles boasts 4K resolution support, along with battle themes from previous Final Fantasy titles, given that Square Enix is handling publishing duties. Indeed, Fantasian Neo Dimension is more than just a callback to the classics of yore or a mere nostalgia fix, as the game has its own quirks to make it stand out of a crowded pack . However, it has a few notable flaws, namely with the controls and camera movement, as well as the narrative arc and combat. Like numerous RPGs, Fantasian Neo Dimension tells the story of an amnesiac. In this case, an adventurer named Leo has found himself jumping back and forth between realms, not knowing what led him down this path. As you piece together Leo’s story, you’re joined by a memorable cast of characters, such as the demure Kina, a healer with a mysterious power, and rambunctious princess Cheryl, whose attitude proves to be more than a match for poor Leo. Fantasian Neo Dimension ’s story does have its share of serious themes, like children yearning for their parents, and the emotional connections that can eventually grow among newfound friends. At the same time, Sakaguchi and his team deftly combine these ideas with humor and lighthearted sequences. The game’s cutscenes are bolstered by terrific English and Japanese voice acting to further heighten the drama or convey the relationships among the characters. I can recall the many times I chuckled whenever party members like Zinikr, a boisterous ship captain, and Ez, a vagabond youth, chided Leo for forgetting the traps he set in his own headquarters. Likewise, there were times when mysterious elflike researcher Valrika interpreted things a little too literally, and made remarks about her taste for men with beards. The appearances of the Cinderella Tri-Stars, recurring bosses with some hilarious battle shenanigans, made me laugh out loud, too. There were also a few callbacks to JRPGs, most notably the love triangle involving Leo, Kina, and Cheryl — complete with hints of jealousy — which reminded me of Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa from Final Fantasy 7 . Fantasian Neo Dimension ’s campaign, meanwhile, made me feel like I was playing Chrono Trigger all over again. My journey took me to other realms not necessarily through time travel quirks, but via dimension hopping to distant places with their own unique designs and landscapes. The art design in the game is nothing short of wonderful, with vivid hand-crafted backgrounds akin to dioramas, from lush forests and frozen mountaintops, to dingy dungeons and cities overrun with Mechteria. Sadly, I’ve also noticed that a few backgrounds and environmental details weren’t fully rendered in 4K, making them look blurry when up close. This, too, is further compounded by janky controls and camera movement. Fantasian Neo Dimension offers three control schemes: gamepad, mouse clicks, and WASD keys. Unfortunately, the sweeping movement of the camera view — perhaps intended to make exploration feel more dynamic — happened so frequently that it felt as though I was fighting with my gamepad’s analog stick just to get my character to move toward a location. Speaking of Mechteria, these pustulant growths are harmful to humans, blocking pathways or depleting your party’s HP if you get too close. The presence and origins of Mechteria in the world are further explained as you progress through the campaign. In keeping with the other RPGs that clearly influenced this game, let’s just say that the planet-annihilating antagonists you fear at the start are but the tip of the iceberg in a narrative arc that goes from zero to 100 rather quickly. After a predominantly linear and tightly woven first half of the campaign, the second half devolves into a nonlinear and disjointed series of “rescue the rest of your team” dungeon romps. This presentation worked as a two-part launch in 2021, since the parts had a monthslong gap between their releases, but the transition from the first half to the second is jarring in a full release at this stage. In a way, the disparity between the two halves also reminded me of discs 1 and 2 of Xenogears , where the former and latter had vastly different structures and presentation. Combat in Fantasian Neo Dimension consists of random enemy encounters, which occur as you explore landscapes. A unique twist to this tried-and-tested formula is the inclusion of the aforementioned Dimengeon device, a means of “banking” or “collecting” enemies until you’re ready to take them on in one huge battle. However, the Dimengeon also has an (upgradable) limit, so you have to be mindful of when to trigger the encounter, lest you get overwhelmed later on. I enjoyed utilizing this feature for the most part, though the latter half of the campaign proved to be tedious due to so many encounters happening within seconds of each other. I had to partake in multiple Dimengeon battles with over 40 enemies, so much so that the pacing became unbearable. (There’s a way to completely reset the Dimengeon counter, but this required me to warp to another town. Although fast travel in the game is very player-friendly, I didn’t always have the means to teleport to and from certain maps or sections.) Meanwhile, the battles themselves are your usual turn-based affair, with enemies and your three-person party taking actions based on the initiative bar. Another refreshing take in Fantasian Neo Dimension is that most character skills and spells pierce through enemies, and you can align their trajectory to hit specific foes in a straight or curved line. For example, if one opponent is blocking its cohorts behind it, you can “bend” your spell to strike those targets instead. The concept adds new tactical layers in how I approached battles, especially during instances when I had to prioritize specific foes or power-ups. The downside is that enemy variety is lacking in many areas, with the game often featuring the same monster types, albeit with different elemental weaknesses. My only other complaint with Fantasian Neo Dimension ’s combat is that several key mechanics are introduced a bit too late in the campaign. This is somewhat understandable in the case of Growth Maps — character-specific skill trees with dozens of perks and upgrades akin to Final Fantasy 10 ’s Sphere Grid system — since these are unlocked as you obtain key items known as Divine Artifacts. Still, I would’ve wanted to have seen the Tension system, akin to Limit Breaks (i.e., powerful abilities that can be unleashed only upon filling a gauge) introduced sooner. I can only surmise that this was due to the original’s two-part launch, where the release of part 2 made it feel like an expansion of sorts for those who had already gone through part 1. For a full release, though, a few major tweaks would’ve been necessary to align these mechanics with expected player progression. One positive aspect worth mentioning is that unlike the original version of the game, Fantasian Neo Dimension has Normal Mode, a welcome concept given that the Apple Arcade release only had Hard Mode as its default difficulty. This makes the game significantly more approachable for newcomers. The grind becomes a lot more manageable if you’re attempting to bring down the game’s toughest bosses, too. Still, don’t expect those fights to be cakewalks, since you still need to be mindful of your party composition, character perks, and equipment. Moreover, the collaboration between Mistwalker and Square Enix has led to one of the best features in the game: the ability to choose from battle themes from other Final Fantasy titles, such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake , Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth , Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker , Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail , and Final Fantasy 16 . I honestly grinned from ear to ear when I fought a couple of slime mobs and Uematsu’s brilliant “One-Winged Angel” suddenly played in the background. Even with just the default music, Uematsu’s genius remains on full display, with soaring and haunting melodies complementing each stage and location. There’s even a tune that sounds like a more sinister rendition of the classic Prelude/Crystal theme from the Final Fantasy series. In the end, Fantasian Neo Dimension is still a solid offering from Mistwalker, one that brought back memories of classic RPGs I played decades prior, including those featuring work from Sakaguchi and Uematsu. References and callbacks abound, though there are still refreshing concepts to keep you engaged for dozens of hours, including a secret dungeon and a new game plus mode. Just watch out for the annoying camera movements all throughout and the ridiculous number of encounters toward the later portion of the game. BERLIN — German authorities have arrested a Lebanese man accused of being a member of Hezbollah and working for groups controlled by the militant organization in Germany. Federal prosecutors said the suspect, identified only as Fadel R. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested in the Hannover region on Tuesday. The man is suspected of membership in a foreign terrorist organization and is not accused of direct involvement in any violence. Prosecutors said he joined Hezbollah in the summer of 2008 or earlier and took part in leadership training courses in Lebanon. From 2009, he allegedly had leadership duties in two groups controlled by Hezbollah in the Hannover area, organizing appearances by preachers close to the militants. According to prosecutors, he was briefly a correspondent for a Hezbollah media outlet in 2017 and was tasked with coordinating building work at a mosque. Germany is a staunch ally of Israel. It is also home to a Lebanese immigrant community of more than 100,000. BEIRUT — The Lebanese army is looking for more recruits as it beefs up its presence in southern Lebanon after the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire. Lebanon’s army is a respected national institution that kept to the sidelines during the nearly 14-month conflict. During an initial 60-day truce, thousands of Lebanese troops are supposed to deploy in southern Lebanon, where U.N. peacekeepers also have a presence. Hezbollah militants are to pull back from areas near the border as Israel withdraws its ground forces. The army said those interested in joining up have a one-month period to apply, starting Tuesday. The Lebanese army has about 80,000 troops, with around 5,000 of them deployed in the south. DAMASCUS, Syria — Syria’s state news agency says a drone strike hit a car in a suburb of the capital, Damascus, killing one person. The agency did not give further details or say who was killed. It said the attack occurred Tuesday on the road leading to the Damascus International Airport south of the city. The area is known to be home to members of Iran-backed militant groups. Israel is believed to have carried out a number of strikes in the area in recent months as it has battled Iran-backed Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon. Israeli officials rarely acknowledge such strikes. JERUSALEM — Israel’s defense minister warned that if the shaky ceasefire with Hezbollah collapses, Israel will widen its strikes and target the Lebanese state itself. He spoke the day after Israel carried out a wave of airstrikes that killed nearly a dozen people. Those strikes came after the Lebanese militant group fired a volley of projectiles as a warning over what it said were previous Israeli violations. Speaking to troops on the northern border Tuesday, Defense Minister Israel Katz said any violations of the agreement would be met with “a maximum response and zero tolerance.” He said if the war resumes, Israel will widen its strikes beyond the areas where Hezbollah’s activities are concentrated, and “there will no longer be an exemption for the state of Lebanon.” During the 14-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which came to an end last week with a ceasefire brokered by the United States and France, Israel largely refrained from striking critical infrastructure or the Lebanese armed forces, who kept to the sidelines . When Israeli strikes killed or wounded Lebanese soldiers, the Israeli military said it was accidental . The ceasefire agreement that took effect last week gives 60 days for Israel to withdraw its forces from Lebanon and for Hezbollah militants to relocate north of the Litani River. The buffer zone is to be patrolled by Lebanese armed forces and U.N. peacekeepers. Israel has carried out multiple strikes in recent days in response to what it says are violations by Hezbollah. Lebanon’s parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, accused Israel of violating the truce more than 50 times in recent days by launching airstrikes, demolishing homes near the border and violating Lebanon’s airspace. Berri, a Hezbollah ally, had helped mediate the ceasefire. JERUSALEM — Palestinian officials say an Israeli airstrike in the northern West Bank has killed two Palestinians. Israel’s military said it struck a militant cell near the town of Al-Aqaba, in the Jordan Valley. It did not immediately give more details. The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the two deaths and said a third person was moderately wounded. About 800 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack out of Gaza ignited the war there. Israel has carried out near-daily military raids in the West Bank that it says are aimed at preventing attacks on Israelis, which have also been on the rise. Israel captured the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians want all three territories for an independent state. BEIRUT — Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon made his first public appearance in Beirut since he was wounded in an attack involving exploding pagers in mid-September. Mojtaba Amani, who returned to Lebanon over the weekend after undergoing treatment in Iran, visited on Tuesday the scene south of Beirut where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Sept. 27. Speaking about the airstrike that destroyed six buildings and killed Nasrallah and others, Amani said Israel should get for its act “the highest medal for sabotage, terrorism, blood and killing civilians.” Amani suffered serious injuries in his face and hands when a pager he was holding exploded in mid-September. The device was one of about 3,000 pagers that exploded simultaneously, killing and wounding many Hezbollah members. A day after the pager attack, a similar attack struck walkie-talkies. In total, the explosions killed at least 37 people and wounded more than 3,000, many of them civilians. Last month, a spokesperson for the office of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the pager attack was approved by Netanyahu.

Amy Klobuchar said in a statement. “That’s changed now thanks to her trailblazing legacy.” Murphy was first elected to serve House District 14B from 1977-1982 and went on to serve District 8A from 1983-2002, District 6B from 2003-2012 and District 3B from 2013-2022. In 2022, Murphy lost the District 3B race against Republican Natalie Zeleznikar by a mere 33 votes. Zeleznikar, who retained the seat in the 2024 election, expressed condolences in a Facebook post, writing: “Mary worked hard for northern Minnesota, a place she called home her entire lifetime. Her dedication, service and hard work can be witnessed in multiple projects across the communities she served. HOUSTON (AP) — An elaborate parody appears to be behind an effort to resurrect Enron, the Houston-based energy company that exemplified the worst in American corporate fraud and greed after it went bankrupt in 2001. If its return is comedic, some former employees who lost everything in Enron’s collapse aren’t laughing. “It’s a pretty sick joke and it disparages the people that did work there. And why would you want to even bring it back up again?” said former Enron employee Diana Peters, who represented workers in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings. Here’s what to know about the history of Enron and the purported effort to bring it back. Once the nation’s seventh-largest company, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 2, 2001, after years of accounting tricks could no longer hide billions of dollars in debt or make failing ventures appear profitable. The energy company's collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered $60 billion in Enron stock worthless. Its aftershocks were felt throughout the energy sector. Twenty-four Enron executives , including former CEO Jeffrey Skilling , were eventually convicted for their roles in the fraud. Enron founder Ken Lay’s convictions were vacated after he died of heart disease following his 2006 trial. On Monday — the 23rd anniversary of the bankruptcy filing — a company representing itself as Enron announced in a news release that it was relaunching as a “company dedicated to solving the global energy crisis.” It also posted a video on social media, advertised on at least one Houston billboard and a took out a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle In the minute-long video that was full of generic corporate jargon, the company talks about “growth” and “rebirth.” It ends with the words, “We’re back. Can we talk?” Enron's new website features a company store, where various items featuring the brand's tilted “E” logo are for sale, including a $118 hoodie. In an email, company spokesperson Will Chabot said the new Enron was not doing any interviews yet, but that "We’ll have more to share soon.” Signs point to the comeback being a joke. In the “terms of use and conditions of sale” on the company's website, it says “the information on the website about Enron is First Amendment protected parody, represents performance art, and is for entertainment purposes only.” Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that College Company, an Arkansas-based LLC, owns the Enron trademark. The co-founder of College Company is Connor Gaydos, who helped create a joke conspiracy theory that claims all birds are actually surveillance drones for the government. Peters said that since learning about the “relaunch” of Enron, she has spoken with several other former employees and they are also upset by it. She said the apparent stunt was “in poor taste.” “If it’s a joke, it’s rude, extremely rude. And I hope that they realize it and apologize to all of the Enron employees,” Peters said. It is a landmark of Alabama history. The Bright Star is the place to see and be seen. Anybody who is famous and well connected in Alabama politics eats at The Bright Star when they are in Birmingham. It is a regular place to gather for Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, and Walker County politicos. Steve Flowers It has also been the favorite eating location for legendary Alabama football coaches Paul “Bear” Bryant and Nick Saban. In fact, there are private dining booths named the Bear Bryant Room and Nick Saban Room. In recent years Alabama basketball coach, Nate Oats, has become a regular. He has become close friends with the heir apparent owner, Andreas Anastassakis. Greek families have been the Lords of all the famous restaurants in Alabama. The Bright Star may be the brightest star in the history of Alabama’s fine dining. However, if they have had a rival in past years, it was the magnificent Elite Restaurant in downtown Montgomery. The Elite was run by the Xides family. Ed Xides ran an impeccable restaurant. They and the famous Sahara Restaurant in Montgomery were excellent but both closed decades ago. The Bright Star continues to shine. It makes every culinary list of favorite Birmingham Restaurants every year. It dominates every list in every category. Two brothers, Jimmy and Nicky Koikos, have continued the magnificent heritage of excellence at the Bessemer landmark for the last 50 years. Jimmy passed away from cancer a few years ago. Nicky continues to manage the fine eatery. He is there every day at age 78. The Bright Star is in its 118th year. The restaurant opened in 1907 with only a horseshoe shaped bar. It opened its doors to the bustling coal mining community of Jefferson County that year. It moved three times in the early years. The Bright Star moved to its present location in downtown Bessemer in 1915. The original marble floors and marble walls exist today. Can you imagine how majestic and elegant this place was to diners in early 20th century Bessemer? Another unique interior feature at The Bright Star is its array of murals painted by a European artist passing through Bessemer and restored to their original brightness in 2010. Good service and high-quality cuisine have perpetuated The Bright Star’s reputation for excellence. Fresh seafood is delivered daily from the Gulf Coast. Only the finest cuts of steak available are served. The Bright Star’s longtime dedication to culinary excellence was recognized on the national stage in 2010, when it was named one of “America’s Classics” by the James Beard Foundation at a ceremony in New York City. The fine food and service make it a delightful place to eat, but what I love about the place is its history and family legacy. When you see Nicky Koikos, you can look over his shoulder at portraits of his mother and father, who ran the restaurant for decades prior to Nicky and Jimmy. Jimmy and Nicky Koikos took over the reins in the 1970s. They were keeping it in the family. Nephew Andreas Anastassakis and niece Stacey Cocoris Craig have come on board to take over. Andreas is also the Chief Master Chef. The walls of the great Bright Star are adorned with photographs of some of the most famous people in America, like Sandra Bullock. However, it is practically a museum of University of Alabama football legends, who ate there regularly, including legends that won lots of national Championships like Bear Bryant, Nick Saban, Gene Stallings, and greats like Joe Namath, Johnny Musso, John Hannah to name a few. Even the legendary Bright Star maître d of 46 years, Marlon, is cousins with Marlon Humphrey and Bobby Humphrey. Bryant used to call him “Speedy.” Some of my fondest memories are having dinner at The Bright Star, with two of our iconic U.S. Senators, Judge Howell Heflin and Senator Richard Shelby. Shelby and Heflin both considered The Bright Star their favorite Alabama restaurant. It is a merry place to visit at Christmas. See you next week. What are the options? 1) Protesting? Important, but usually not the long game. 2) Signing email form letters, which only 3 percent of Congressional staffers say is highly effective? Just gestures. 3) Taking a two-year nap until the next election? Sadly, the preferred route for many. But few Americans know about option 4) transformational advocacy, which helps you change an issue and changes you in the process. If transformational advocacy can have an impact on issues we care about and on our own souls, why do so few of us engage? Let’s be honest — almost everyone shies away from advocacy as a way to make a difference. We donate to climate change organizations, but we don’t meet with a member of Congress or write a letter to the editor. We donate to groups working to end gun violence, anti-hunger organizations, groups dedicated to racial justice and many others, but we don’t become advocates on those issues beyond signing an online petition or going to an occasional rally. Why? Because most of us see advocacy as too hard or too frustrating, too complicated or too partisan, too dirty or too time-consuming, too ineffective or too costly. But what if that’s all wrong? What if deep engagement dissolves discouragement and can actually bring joy? What if you can become an advocate for a cause you care about and feel fulfilled, not frustrated? And what if engaging as an advocate is essential to protecting our democracy? It is essential, but we’re constantly receiving the wrong signals from people who should know better. In a 2023 Salon interview, a University of Pennsylvania political science professor said, “Few people can meaningfully participate in national politics beyond voting (this is just as true of political scientists as it is of regular folks).” Really? We should just hang up our hats? No thank you! “People want to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” said Bill O’Keefe, executive vice president of mission, mobilization and advocacy at Catholic Relief Services. With that realization, in 2019 CRS launched a program to develop chapters that would deeply engage their members in transformational advocacy and fundraising. CRS wanted to support their members in doing much more than just voting and signing petitions. During President-elect Donald Trump’s first term, chapter members began working to pass the Global Child Thrive Act, a bill that would require the administration to integrate early childhood development techniques into all child-focused international aid programs — activities like reading and singing to children, playing with colorful objects and providing better nutrition. The simple things we do to help our own children and grandchildren thrive would make a world of difference for children globally, especially those living in refugee camps and in other difficult circumstances. At the end of a grueling campaign, one CRS volunteer shared how she felt when her House member, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., spoke during passage of the bill in 2020: “When (we met with the congressman in 2019 to ask him to introduce the bill), I was a nervous wreck. It was my first time truly advocating ... and I wanted to get it right ... (but) seeing him speak today (on the House floor) and knowing that he actually listened, learned and worked for something that meant so much to the people he represents has given me renewed hope in the future of our government. I feel privileged to be a part of this experience.” The Global Child Thrive Act passed with veto-proof majorities in the House and Senate as part of the much larger National Defense Authorization Act. The bill was vetoed by Trump, but the veto was overridden by Congress, and the bill became law on Jan. 1, 2021. Most Americans still wonder how, and even if, they can make a difference between elections. It’s time for nonprofits to offer transformational advocacy and help us save our democracy.Is Enron back? NEW YORK (AP) — The leaders of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign insist they simply didn't have enough time to execute a winning strategy against Donald Trump , pointing to “ferocious" political headwinds that were ultimately too much to overcome in the 107-day period after President Joe Biden stepped aside . Harris' leadership team, speaking on the “Pod Save America” podcast that aired on Tuesday, defended strategic decisions over the campaign's closing days, some of which have faced scrutiny in the weeks since Trump's decisive victory . Specifically, they defended Harris' outreach to Republican voters, her unwillingness to distance herself from Biden, her silence on Trump's attacks on her transgender policies and her inability to schedule an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan. “In a 107-day race, it is very difficult to do all the things you would normally do in a year and a half, two years,” said Harris campaign senior adviser Jen O'Malley Dillon. David Plouffe, another senior adviser, added, “There was a price to be paid for the short campaign." The pointed reflections on Harris' loss came just before she declared she was “proud of the campaign we ran” during a conference call with supporters as the party begins a painful process of self-examination. Trump won every swing state and made gains among key voting groups traditionally aligned with Democrats — young voters and voters of color, among them. Backed by the resounding win, the Republican president-elect is claiming a mandate to enact his populist agenda as he prepares to return to the White House on Jan. 20. Harris acknowledged her defeat during the conference call, but praised the political organization her team built that featured more than 408,000 volunteers who knocked on nearly 20 million doors and made over 219 million phone calls. “What we did in 107 days was unprecedented,” she said, noting that her campaign also raised more than $1.4 billion, which marks a record for U.S. presidential campaigns. Still, Harris' campaign finished the election in debt . And none of the Harris advisers acknowledged any mistakes during the wide-ranging podcast interview hosted by former Democratic operatives. Instead, they indicated that Harris had few options given the compressed timeframe and the broad anti-incumbent headwinds that have challenged elected officials across the world. They also gave Trump's team some credit. They specifically pointed to Trump's closing attack ad, which highlighted Harris' support for taxpayer-funded sex reassignment surgeries for transgender prisoners. “Obviously, it was a very effective ad at the end,” said Harris deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks. “I think that it made her seem out of touch.” The campaign tested several potential response ads but, in the end, decided it was best to avoid a specific rebuttal. “There’s no easy answers to this,” O'Malley Dillon said. Plouffe said he thought the Trump attack ad against “Bidenomics” was even more effective, but he acknowledged that the transgender attacks were not helpful. “She was on tape," he said. "Surgery for trans people who want to transition in prison was part of the Biden-Harris platform in 2020. It was part of what the administration did, right?” And while the campaign has faced lingering questions about its media strategy, Harris' team said she actually wanted to participate in a podcast with Rogan, who is among the world's most popular podcasters and ultimately endorsed Trump. Stephanie Cutter, another Harris senior adviser, said the campaign wasn't able to “find a date” to make it work. “We had discussions with Joe Rogan’s team. They were great. They wanted us to come on. We wanted to come on,” she said. “Will she do it sometime in the future? Maybe. Who knows. But it didn’t ultimately impact the outcome one way or the other.” Plouffe noted that the campaign offered to do the Rogan podcast on the road in Austin, Texas. Trump ultimately did his interview with Rogan in the podcaster's studio. Harris' campaign brass also defended her decision to court moderate Republicans in the campaign's closing days. The decision has drawn ire from some progressives, who believe Harris should have worked harder to turn out more traditional Democratic voters. “This political environment sucked, OK? We were dealing with ferocious headwinds,” Plouffe said. “So we had a complicated puzzle to put together here in terms of the voters.” He acknowledged some “drift” toward Trump among non-college-educated voters, particularly voters of color, which made Harris' outreach to moderate voters even more important. “Yes, of course, you have to maximize your turnout and your vote share amongst liberal voters if you’re a Democrat. That was a huge focus,” he said. He added, “You’ve got to couple that with dominating in the middle. Not just winning it a little. We have to dominate the moderate vote." Speaking on Tuesday's conference call, Harris' running mate Tim Walz described the election result as “incredibly disappointing” and “a bit scary." But he praised the campaign's effort. “There will be a day of reckoning when it will be asked, ‘What did you do during the 2024 campaign?’ Well, I know the people on this call can say, everything they possibly could,” Walz said. “And for that, as an American, I’m incredibly grateful.”

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Clarke Reed , a Mississippi businessman who developed the Republican Party in his home state and across the South starting in the 1960s, died Sunday at his home in Greenville, Mississippi. He was 96. Reed was chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party from 1966 to 1976, beginning at a time when Democrats still dominated in the region. During the 1976 Republican National Convention, delegates were closely divided between President Gerald Ford and former California Gov. Ronald Reagan. Reed united the Mississippi delegation behind Ford — a move that created a decadeslong feud with William D. “Billy” Mounger, another wealthy businessman who was prominent in the Mississippi Republican Party. Reed recalled in a 2016 interview with The Associated Press that delegates faced considerable pressure. Movie stars visited Mississippi's 30 delegates to push for Reagan, and Betty Ford called on behalf of her husband. Reagan met twice with the Mississippi delegation — once with his proposed running mate, Pennsylvania Sen. Richard Schweiker — and once without, according Haley Barbour, who was executive director of the Mississippi Republican Party in 1976 and served as the state's governor from 2004 to 2012. “Everybody was coming to see us," Reed said. “These poor people had never seen this before, the average delegate.” Mississippi delegates were showing the stress at a meeting away from the convention floor in Kansas City, Reed said. “I looked out, and about half of them were crying," he said. ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — Google, already facing a possible breakup of the company over its ubiquitous search engine , is fighting to beat back another attack by the U.S. Department of Justice alleging monopolistic conduct, this time over technology that puts online advertising in front of consumers. The Justice Department and Google made closing arguments Monday in a trial alleging Google's advertising technology constitutes an illegal monopoly. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia, will decide the case and is expected to issue a written ruling by the end of the year. If Brinkema finds Google has engaged in illegal, monopolistic conduct, she will then hold further hearings to explore what remedies should be imposed. The Justice Department, along with a coalition of states, has already said it believes Google should be forced to sell off parts of its ad tech business, which generates tens of billions of dollars annually for the Mountain View, California-based company. After roughly a month of trial testimony earlier this year, the arguments in the case remain the same. During three hours of arguments Monday, Brinkema, who sometimes tips her hand during legal arguments, did little to indicate how she might rule. She did, though, question the applicability of a key antitrust case Google cites in its defense. The Justice Department contends Google built and maintained a monopoly in “open-web display advertising,” essentially the rectangular ads that appear on the top and right-hand side of the page when one browses websites. Google dominates all facets of the market. A technology called DoubleClick is used pervasively by news sites and other online publishers, while Google Ads maintains a cache of advertisers large and small looking to place their ads on the right webpage in front of the right consumer. In between is another Google product, AdExchange, that conducts nearly instantaneous auctions matching advertisers to publishers. In court papers, Justice Department lawyers say Google “is more concerned with acquiring and preserving its trifecta of monopolies than serving its own publisher and advertiser customers or winning on the merits.” As a result, content providers and news organizations have never been able to generate the online revenue they should due to Google’s excessive fees for brokering transactions between advertisers and publishers, the government says. Google argues the government's case improperly focuses on a narrow niche of online advertising. If one looks more broadly at online advertising to include social media, streaming TV services, and app-based advertising, Google says it controls as little as 10% of the market, a share that is dwindling as it faces increased and evolving competition. Google alleges in court papers that the government’s lawsuit “boil(s) down to the persistent complaints of a handful of Google’s rivals and several mammoth publishers.” Google also says it has invested billions in technology that facilitates the efficient match of advertisers to interested consumers and it should not be forced to share its technology and success with competitors. “Requiring a company to do further engineering work to make its technology and customers accessible by all of its competitors on their preferred terms has never been compelled by U.S. antitrust law,” the company wrote. Brinkema, during Monday's arguments, also sought clarity on Google’s market share, a number the two sides dispute, depending on how broadly the market is defined. Historically, courts have been unwilling to declare an illegal monopoly in markets in which a company holds less than a 70% market share. Google says that when online display advertising is viewed as a whole, it holds only a 10% market share, and dwindling. The Justice Department contends, though, that when focusing on open-web display advertising, Google controls 91% of the market for publisher ad servers and 87% of the market for advertiser ad networks. Google says that the “open web display advertising” market is gerrymandered by the Justice Department to make Google look bad, and that nobody in the industry looks at that category of ads without considering the ability of advertisers to switch to other forms of advertising, like in mobile apps. The Justice Department also contends that the public is harmed by the excessive rates Google charges to facilitate ad purchases, saying the company takes 36 cents on the dollar when it facilitates the transaction end to end. Google says its “take rate” has dropped to 31% and continues to decrease, and it says that rate is lower than that of its competitors. “When you have an integrated system, one of the benefits is lower prices," Google lawyer Karen Dunn said Monday. The Virginia case is separate from an ongoing lawsuit brought against Google in the District of Columbia over its namesake search engine. In that case, the judge determined it constitutes an illegal monopoly but has not decided what remedy to impose. The Justice Department said last week it will seek to force Google to sell its Chrome web browser , among a host of other penalties. Google has said the department's request is overkill and unhinged from legitimate regulation. In Monday's arguments, Justice Department lawyer Aaron Teitelbaum cited the search engine case when he highlighted an email from a Google executive, David Rosenblatt, who said in a 2009 email that Google’s goal was to “do to display what Google did to search," which Teitelbaum said showed the company's intent to achieve market dominance. “Google did not achieve its trifecta of monopolies by accident,” Teitelbaum said.
